175 (2011 World AIDS Day poem)

As the bars closed the windows rolled down I heard the cries of a happy man.
He sang with joy as though it was his first
and last day in one.
He sang and all the hope in the world
flooded my soul.
He sang and soon the sound
was in all of me.

As the bars closed and the windows came in I heard the cries of a happy man.
His voice was laden with sparks which flickered and glistened
like fireflies in the darkness.
His voice was sweet and it rang and stirred
my soul to dancing.
His voice was the light and the darkness meeting at once
only to part.

The windows drew in and the world was shut.
The windows drew in and the world was shut.
The windows drew in and the world was shut.
No borders but barriers
No barriers but walls
No walls but chains
No chains but whips
No whips but words
No words but stares
STOP!

He’s a 175. They picked him up in one of those pig-rooms, where the 66s loiter.
The 411's that they caught him in a 39, or was it 69?

It was a spit-roast!

And the sun soon set and the light disappeared.
The septic stench of hours gone by filled the room.
They lay gaping.
Torn.
Ripped.

And the laughing man from the room down the hall carried on.
His cheers were diluted
by the pool gathering at his feet.
His cheers penetrated
the somber cloud cruising the hall.

His cheers went unaccompanied.

His cheeks were drenched.

Little pink triangles.

Ten-HUT!

Shhhhh… The pleasure gives way to pain
and the pain makes you all the better to play with.
